The Airport Incident

in Weekly Newspaper Column Archives on 02/14/08

My husband is such a darling.  He is forever putting up with my antics and is always willing to go the extra mile for me no matter what situation I’ve gotten myself into.

Even before we were married he didn’t mind being put in embarrassing situations. Once he even stopped at the small store in his hometown to purchase feminine hygiene products when I was unable to go myself. Given that he was only nineteen years old at the time, I found it pretty remarkable.  In that moment I knew God must have specially gifted him to be my husband, because only God knew just how many awkward situations this man would find himself in over the years.

Sixteen years later, hubby found himself, yet again, in the awkward position of purchasing feminine hygiene products.  Only this time we were at the Minneapolis airport, returning from California. Time was limited, and all hubby needed was a pack of gum, but then I came dashing into the small gift shop.

I grabbed a chocolate bar and a package of two tampons and tossed them on the counter with his gum.  The cashier rang up the tampons, and not wanting to waste even a moment, I picked them up from the counter and dashed to a bathroom, leaving hubby to pay for the purchases.

I took care of business and as I was exiting the bathroom stall I noticed an elderly woman with a nosebleed.  If she needed help I couldn’t just leave her standing there.  On the other hand, hubby would be waiting for me as we had only a few moments left to find our gate.

I thought about the second tampon tucked into my backpack and briefly remembered someone telling me they had once used one to successfully stop a nosebleed.  I toyed with the idea of offering it to the woman, but upon taking in her overall appearance realized she was much too classy to walk around with a tampon shoved up her nose.

I talked to her for a few minutes, asking if she had family in the airport that she would like for me to find, and stayed with her until the bleeding stopped.  We were leaving the restroom together when I heard someone shouting my name.  I looked up to see hubby still at the gift shop cash register, a line of business men behind him, motioning frantically for me to hurry.  I dashed over and quickly took in the situation.
