I’ll be loving you for always

in Weekly Newspaper Column Archives on 02/29/12

Twenty-one years ago, when hubby and I were planning our wedding, I wasn’t really sure how to go about choosing songs.  I knew I didn’t want recorded music, but finding sheet music was a bit difficult.  Back in those days, we didn’t have the benefit of googling the lyrics.

We have never really had a song that we refer to as “our song.”  Our song changes with each stage of our relationship.  When we first began dating, we listened to a lot of Roger Miller. But “England Swings” and “Dang Me” weren’t really appropriate wedding songs.

My grandma shared that her wedding songs were “Truly” and “Always.”  Then she, in turn, sang them at my parent’s wedding.  I decided to be the third generation to use those songs, so I made my way to the downtown Indianapolis library and sorted through their sheet music.  Life is simpler now that we have internet, but it sure doesn’t make the same memories.

As soon as my first baby was born, I found that “Truly” and “Always” are just as meaningful when used as lullabies. I’ve sung them to each of my babies while rocking them to sleep.

    I love you truly

Truly dear

Life with its sorrow

Life with its fear

Fades into dreams when I feel you are near

For I love you truly,

Truly dear!

This morning, four-year-old baby boy crawled into my lap with his blankie.  He has been under the weather this week, and just needed some snuggle time.  Soon enough, I found myself singing my love songs to him.

“Why you singing those songs?” he asked.

“Because I will always love you forever and ever!” I replied.

I sang them again, and he seemed to really be thinking about the meaning of the words.  This time though, I realized that I won’t always be there for him.  Someday, he will have to live life without me.  I pray that he is well into adulthood before that happens, but regardless of when my time comes, I hope that all five of my children know that my love will linger on….always.

Dreams will all come true

Growing old with you

Time will fly

Caring more each day

Than the day before

As spring rolls by

Then when the springtime has gone

Then will my love linger on

I’ll be loving you

Always

With a love that’s true

Always

When the things you’ve planned

Need a helping hand,

I will understand

Always

Always

Days may not be fair

Always

That’s when I’ll be there

Always

Not for just an hour

Not for just a day

Not for just a year

But Always
