My big fat to-do list

in Weekly Newspaper Column Archives on 03/26/12

I’ve been working on my To-Do list for the past couple of days, and it is nearly finished.  I haven’t completed any items, but the actual list itself is nearly done.  I am having surgery in six weeks, and there are a number of things I’d like to accomplish before my two week confinement.  The last thing I want to do is lay around in bed and think about all the things I should be doing.

On the upside, hubby is going to be my caregiver during that time.  So, maybe if I ask in my feeblest, most pitiful voice he could do things like organize the bedroom closet, and arrange dental appointments for all of the children.

Maybe he could hold the VBS planning meeting, locate the PIN for my new debit card, and register the kids for the new school they will be attending next year.

I’d be thrilled if hubby spent my recuperation period choosing and arranging for the installation of our new kitchen backsplash.   He could also send a care package to our oldest daughter since she is apparently the only girl at Indiana University that has never received one.

I’d let him get the oil changed in the car, and set up an appointment with the dealer to figure out why our backseat no longer folds down.

I bet he’d do a great job of planning the wedding reception I agreed to be in charge of for a friend.  He could also do all the prep work for the huge party “we” are throwing for his class late in May.

He’s a really good cook, so I might be able to mark off “cook two weeks’ worth of meals and put in freezer.”  He’s also good at keeping track of things, so maybe he could figure out what I did with the phone bill and get that paid.

My list is already as long as my arm, but if I knew he’d take care of it, I’d make it even longer.  I’d add things like: put new siding on the house, clean out the basement, and pave the driveway.   I might have a hard time passing those things off as items I’d actually accomplish if I didn’t have surgery, but it would be worth a shot!

The reality is, he can do just about anything I can do, but he tends to do it better.  He will probably make sure the kids have clean faces and matching clothes whenever he takes them anywhere.   He will cook nutritious homemade meals three times a day.  And because he tends to obsess about clean floors, the entire house will probably be vacuumed daily.  Of course, he will have to take the vacuum cleaner to the repair shop first, unless I manage to mark that off my list.
